The Power of Trying
How tiny steps can lead to big changes
I used to think that in order to make some difference in my life, I need to take big, life-changing actions. I imagined moving to another country, searching for another job, or investing in a big project all at once. But the truth is, change doesn’t always happen in grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the tiny steps that lead to the biggest transformations.
Just a little pause— Today, I feel a little bit irritated. There’s a sudden flare up of my skin-allergies—sadly, I have had this condition since I was young. There were times when I didn’t give much attention to my skin, yet indeed it is my most unpredictable companion. Anyway, I just remember that I have to keep trying—living with skin dermatitis feels like an endless cycle. Since there’s no permanent cure, you can only manage it, and for anyone dealing with it, it is a hard pill to swallow. (sigh)
How often we get paralysed by fear?
Fear of failing, overthinking, and feeling not the best of what we do. As for me, I used to think this way, so as a result, I stayed stagnant. But one day, it hit me, so I decided to try something small. I’ve never been a shy person—I actually love meeting new faces and getting to know different perspectives. But if I’m being honest, starting a conversation has always been a bit intimidating for me.
The thought of opening up to someone I didn’t know filled me with anxiety. I always wondered if people would judge me or if I would say something awkward. I’m not fully introverted, but sometimes the pressure of being in the spotlight makes me anxious. It’s not that I can’t handle it—I remember in school, I enjoyed presenting and participating in class. But as I’ve grown into adulthood, this feels like a whole different challenge.
Overcoming the fear of failure
I still remember the first time I forced myself to strike up a conversation—it wasn’t easy. There was an event where I found myself standing on the side, wondering if I should go up to a group of people. At first, I hesitated, the feeling of awkwardness creeping in. But I knew if I didn’t try, and if I stayed in my comfort zone, I’d never get anywhere. So, I took a deep breath, stepped-in, and introduced myself. I stumbled over my words a bit, but I kept going. It wasn’t perfect but it turned out better than I imagined.
That small act, as uncomfortable as it was, has opened doors I never expected. Every time I push myself to try, I’m reminded that when you seek discomfort, it is always worth it. Now, I can see how trying and showing up for yourself—despite the fear, has gotten me to where I am today.
Takeaways
The idea is that even imperfect action is progress. It doesn’t come from waiting until everything is perfect—it comes from trying, even when things are messy and feels uncertain.
It’s choosing to show up for yourself even when you don’t feel like it. It’s easy to fall into the trap of waiting to be inspired, for the perfect moment, or when things are convenient, but perfection is just an illusion that holds us back.
Trust that as you keep moving forward, the path will unfold in its own time. Every moment of doubt or uncertainty is simply part of the process, guiding you closer to growth. Don’t wait for the “right” time—make your own by taking action, even when things aren’t perfectly aligned.
The more you try, the more clarity and confidence will emerge along the way. The journey is built through progress, not perfection.
